I adore Little House on the Prairie.
While building their not-so-little house, in the fall of 2005, Jade & Adam (long-time friends) lived with us. At that time, each family only had one child. However, Jade & I were both pregnant. When our kids took their afternoon naps, we'd often retreat to the cool, finished basement, put up our feet & catch an episode (or two) of Little House. Good times. :)
As much as I admire women like Caroline Ingalls, I'm the first to admit that I would have made a lousy pioneer woman. I probably would have died on the long, weary trail that many pioneers traveled along with their families, all their earthly possessions & their oxen. A few summer days of extreme heat & humidity, while endlessly traipsing through eye-high prairie grass in an ankle-length prairie skirt would have been the.end.of.me. Throw in some hormone issues, & I would have been a piece of work.
However, I really loved the day trip I recently made to a nearby prairie preserve. Day trips on the prairie...now, that I can do. I attended a women's retreat there, on April 9th. The theme: "Soul Care". Whether walking along a trail or sitting in cozy spot near a babbling stream, each gal was invited & encouraged to focus on her faith.
Along the first half of one trail, I just walked & listened to music. It was BEA-U-TI-FUL out there! Beyond description, really. I wasn't able to look at it all without believing God created it. Along a second trail, in the "back country," several of us even caught a glimpse of the bison that were roaming the prairie. Yep, just us & the bison...sharin' the prairie (while keeping a safe, recommended distance).
The whole day was an incredible opportunity to briefly step away from the "daily" & have several hours to think solely about my faith & my friendships...and return home refreshed!
Well, I was refreshed...in a heart, mind, & soul sort of way. I just didn't "look" the part. LOL! 90 degrees + super windy conditions + the great outdoors doesn't equal returning home smelling fresh as a daisy. I was less than daisy-rrific. Let's just say I'm glad I was able to shower (possibly the equivalent of three times), before greeting my family.
I honestly can't wait to visit the preserve again, with Chad & the kids.
And now...a slideshow of perfectly pretty prairie pics!
(Sorry, couldn't resist)
Luckily, my husband has a wide variety of cowboy songs from which to choose, so I think I found THE perfect song to accompany it. Heehee.
Song: "Rolling Kansas Plains" -Prairie Rose Wranglers
