Last weekend, I guess you could say our family was Keepin' it Kansas (hope you don't mind if I borrowed your phrase, Brandon). Friday evening, we enjoyed our time at the State Fair. We continued the fun, on Saturday, by heading north to cheer on the Wildcats! Here are a few photos!
*Have you ever watched pigs race? You really should. If you're lucky, you'll be chosen from the audience to help lead one of the four cheering sections. Yep, that's me in the green jacket. I haven't been a cheerleader since jr. high, but it all came back to me. Out of three races, our pig...the one in the red...won the final race! Oh, the joy!
*The boys met Millie the weather dog & Ross (meteorologist & Millie's owner), from one of our local news channels. I don't know how long they did her little "meet & greet," but I'm guessing Millie was in heaven having everyone pet her head & tell her how cute she was. The boys happily left with "signed" (little pawprint) photos of Millie. Ross had photos available, too. He's super nice, but the boys were mostly focused on Millie. Sorry, Ross. Maybe, they'll ask for your autograph next time.
*Chad's dad was working a shift at the KDOT booth, at the fair. So, of course, we loved stopping by to see Papa!! The boys kept wishing Papa could end his shift & come walk around the fair with us. :)
*A trip to the State Fair isn't complete without viewing the annual butter sculpture. I have to say, this year's sculpture kind of creeped us out. Monkeys. Riding sheep. Not even cute monkeys. Creepy looking monkeys. Wizard of Oz scary vibe with those monkeys. Still, it's impressive that someone has the skills to sculpt such detail...and out of butter.
*Awww!! See the cute, sweet, little lamb? It's always fun to visit K-State's veterinary/birthing center. Although, as the kids get older, they have a lot more questions about birth. I simply pointed to a mama cow & told the boys she had a baby in her tummy. L immediately asked, "How do they get the baby out?" We eventually took the boys over to the TV showing a pig giving birth. L was grossed out by the slippery, sometimes blood-tinged piglets. J even gagged once, but I think he was just trying to be dramatic. Ha! That'll teach them to ask us about the birthing process. (Just kidding). It was actually a good video of a live animal birth & rather simply answered the question of how animals leave the mama's body.
*The milking of the cows was another highlight. Everyone stands & stares through the large window, as the cows stand in stalls. On display...utters hooked up to a mega pumps extracting every ounce of milk possible. Out of compassion, I kind of wanted to throw them nursing cover-ups.
*Infamous Pronto Pup (a.k.a. corn dog) time! The boys eventually asked if they could remove the corn breading & only eat the hot dog. Fine with me. I hadn't bought one, because I'd rather skip the hot dog. I'm more of a fan of the corn breading. Win-win!
*(sorry, no photo for this one...too blurry): Before leaving the fair, Chad & the boys rode the Tilt-a-Whirl! You can't see them in the blurry photos/video, but you CAN hear Third Day playing in the grandstand behind me. They sounded great live! Wish we had remembered they'd be there that evening.
K-S-U...Wildcats!!
It was good to be at the game, as a family...to have our children officially "swell the cry". It was the first time all four of us had gone together. Great seats! Friends! KSU traditions! KSU won!! It was the first shut-out in several years! Go Cats!
